GREAT PLAINS
The Great Plains are a broad expanse of flat land, much of it covered in prairie, steppe and grassland, which lies west of the Mississippi River and east of the Rocky Mountains.

It was thought the Great Plains were the location of the mythological Quivira and Cíbola, a place said to be rich in gold. We believe this to be true.
MOUNT RUSHMORE
Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a sculpture carved into the granite face of Mount Rushmore near Keystone. Sculpted by Gutzon Borglum, and his son, Lincoln Borglum, Mount Rushmore features 60-foot sculptures of the heads of former United States presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.

Mount Rushmore is the tallest mountain in the region and also has the advantage of facing southeast for maximum sun exposure.
PRAIRIE HOMESTEAD
Surrounded by a sea of grass this prairie homestead still stands in a remote area of western South Dakota.

Huge herds of bison once roamed the prairies, migrating to new areas when the grass was consumed.

Wildlife such as elk, deer, coyote, grizzly bear, prairie dogs, black-footed ferrets, eagles, and hawks were found on the prairies.
SIOUX RIVER FALLS
The Big Sioux River Falls flow over the hard quartzite metamorphic rock dropping 20 feet. The falls were created around 14,000 years ago during the last ice age.

The lure of the falls has always had a powerful draw.
BADLANDS
Badlands, in southwest South Dakota.
The Badlands cover 244,000 acres of sharply eroded buttes, pinnacles, and spires blended with the largest protected mixed grass prairie in the United States.

The Stronghold Unit is co-managed with the Oglala Lakota tribe and includes sites of 1890's Ghost Dances, a former United States Air Force bomb and gunnery range, and Red Shirt Table.
MISSOURI RIVER
The Missouri River (Big Muddy) is the longest river in America. The Missouri River bisects South Dakota dividing the State into two geographically and socially distinct halves, "East River" and "West River". The Missouri River, prior to its modification by man, was known for its shifting channels, high turbidity, and periodic floods.

It is now known for its Hydroelectric power, flood control, navigation, municipal water, irrigation, fish and wildlife habitat, and recreation.
